APL, the container transportation arm of Singapore's Neptune Orient Lines, has signed a charter agreement for five new 7,000TEU post-panamax container ships for world deployment starting in 2009. The vessels are being built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea and will be chartered for five years from German owner Bernhard Schulte. In the near term, APL will introduce seven additional container ships to its fleet this year, raising its total container capacity by around 10 per cent and boosting its fleet to 117.
