UK and french defence giants are manoeuvring themselves into contention for lucrative naval contracts on offer by Brazil, which has the largest and fastest growing defence budget in Latin America. The Marinha do Brasil has a 20-year plan to buy 30 new ships to replace its ageing fleet. At the top of the agenda is a requirement for five frigates, five offshore patrol vessels and a logistics ship. Although a non-binding agreement was recently signed with Italy to meet the requirement, and with France already well-placed, having secured a deal to oversee the indigenous build of Scorpene submarines, the recent elections for the presidency could level the playing field.
