Allan 'ABC book Coastal Cargo Ships by H. M. Le Fleming stated that Stephenson Clarke ships carried the names of Sussex towns and villages. Although place names from this county predominated, this was, in fact, too narrow a geographical description. Examples of names given to the company's colliers can be found not just from Sussex (eg Hove, Pulborough), but also from the counties of Kent (Minster, Stansted), Hampshire (Gosport, Portsmouth), the Isle of Wight (Bowcombe) and Dorset (Branksome, Cerne).
