USS Intrepid (CV11) played a major role in World War Ⅱ, had a varied career as a US Navy aircraft carrier from her launch in April 1943 until her retirement in 1974 and, unlike most navy ships, avoided being scrapped at the end of her career. She now sits proudly on the River Hudson in New York as home to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, and it is fitting that this ship has become a National Historic Landmark. Built by the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company in Virginia, USS Intrepid was laid down on 1 December 1942, launched on 26 April 1943, and commissioned on 16 August 1943. She served with distinction in the Pacific War theatre during World War Ⅱ and underwent a series of modifications which saw her re-classified on a number of occasions as her role changed.
