The marine industry is in one of the most dynamic phases of its history. Rapid expansion of the global economy, fuelled heavily by China, is creating significant growth. The raft of issues facing the bunkering industry continues to concern, frustrate, excite and bewilder members of the marine community in equal measure, and opinions on how best to reduce air emissions and maintain the quality of bunker fuel are generating lively debate around the world. The scale and complexity of the challenge is becoming very clear. Annually in excess of 180M t of fuel oil is being burnt and with around 3t of carbon dioxide (CO_2) being emitted into the atmosphere from every tonne, it is not hard to appreciate the scale of the issue for the shipping industry and our environment.
