No one thought that the industry's longest ever boom period would go bust with such astonishing rapidity, least of all German shipowners, and particularly those involved in the liner trades. Just six months ago they had 1315 vessels (59.5Mdwt), including 434 containerships, on order in contracts worth €62Bn. But today a number of those contracts were financing arrangements remain uncertain have been cancelled or renegotiated. More than a quarter of the orders placed with German shipyards are thought to have been cancelled, a percentage of Germany's containerships are in lay-up, and the number of ships being sold for scrap is on the rise.
