Germany’s coal phase-out could actually increase emissions of CO2 unless combined with a minimum CO2 price or cancellation of EU Allowances, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) director Ottmar Edenhofer told the BDEW energy conference in Berlin Thursday. The institute has just published a study showing how, if mishandled, phased closures of German coal-fired power stations could boost power prices and increase generation from remaining coal-fired plants. Germany’s coal commission has recommended phasing out coal by 2038.
