German fishing trawler sets sail with wind propulsion

Netherlands-based company, Parlevliet & Van der Plas BV has collaborated with German wind propulsion specialist SkySails to begin practical testing of SkySails towing kite propulsion onboard a fishing trawler for the North Sea.rnSkySails patented towing kite propulsion was installed aboard Germany's current largest fishing vessel -ROS-171 Maartje Theodora - on the North Sea near Ijmuiden, Netherlands on 8 March 2010. This system from the Hamburg-based manufacturer will save the shipowner large amounts of fuel and emissions. The maiden voyage of ROS-171 Maartje Theodora with SkySails technology, which will take the vessel across the Atlantic to South America and then into the South Pacific, heralds the use of regenerative energy sources in deep-sea fishing.
