Bruntons takes on CPP competition

Following several years of R&D, Bruntons Propellers has entered the market for controllable-pitch propellers (CPPs) by designing a system targeted initially at vessels with engines of up to l,500kW. The fully-feathering capability incorporated in the new CPP series offers operational flexibility for motor vessels and particular suitability for sailing craft. The company's engineers identified excessive blade wear and high spindle loads as areas which could affect the lifespan of a conventional CPP and its ability to withstand continually changing propeller loads without damage. This has led to the development of a new blade retention system, to reduce blade wear, and the introduction of an innovative, twin cam design to cope with the high spindle loads. The Bruntons CPP is available with a fully automatic control system, using computerised monitoring to enable pitch setting to different performance modes and operating and weather conditions.
