An integration of data acquisition, GPS, and the Internet allows automotive engineers working together―in various parts of the world―to conduct real-time road tests and adjust test parameters on the fly. Complex sensing and control systems are an integral part of transportation vehi-cle design, be it SUV, sedan, 16-wheeler, or farm tractor. In a typical vehicle, the chassis alone includes anti-lock braking, suspension, engine control mod-ules, pedal and gearshift, and steering systems. The power train incorporates systems that regulate air and fuel delivery, ignition and transmission, and oil cooling. Cockpit systems manage instrument panels, doors, windows, and seat positions. Safety systems handle airbags, seatbelts, and anti-theft devices. Federal and local regulations calling for improved fuel economy and cleaner-burning engines, along with customer demands for more comfort, in-vehicle entertainment, and car-office options will assuredly increase the number and complexity of the systems that make our vehicles more like home.
