The research dedicated to SMOX-based gas sensors is a complex but rewarding task. Its progress is needed to ensure the improvement of the sensing performances because the "try and see" approach, which was mostly applied to date, has reached its limits. There are many applications in important fields, such as medical or homeland security, which require a quantum leap in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. To achieve it, the fundamental understanding of the effects governing surface gas reactions, accompanying charge transfer processes, and sensing layer conduction mechanisms is needed. It is also possible to acquire it by using operando investigation methods and by combining them with modeling. In order to bring this field from the stage of black magic to engineering there is a need for a considerable basic science input.
