As oceans continue to warm and acidify, the survival of the tiny floating young of marine mollusks (Haliotis coccoradiata) and sea urchins (Heliocidaris erythrogramma) looks bleak, researchers report online in the Proceedings of Royal Society B. Maria Byrne of the University of Sydney in Australia and colleagues found that young mollusks maturing in slightly warmer and more acidic seawater couldn't calcify their shells and formed amorphous blobs (picture, top right).
