Defining and exploring governance

Globalization encourages new ways for people to organize and govern themselves and others, with all sorts of ramifications. Editor Patricia Kennett calls these new governing arrangements 'governance' and acknowledges that there is little agreement as to what 'governance' is. The contributors to this book provide multiple definitions and examples in their chapters, which succeeds in providing a creative and useful proliferation of ways to describe this concept. Kennett and her contributors are concerned with the effects of two interlinked processes-governance and globalization-have on various public policy arenas. 'Governance' is contrasted with government. Government is older, static, authority-driven and statebound whereas governance questions these categories.
