Source of Sulphur and Leaf Yield in Tobacco

Sulphur has been recognized as fourth major essential nutrient for the growth and development of all plants. Sulphur is a constituent of some important amino acids namely cysteine, cystine and methionine. It is necessary for chlorophyll formation, synthesis of oil, enzymes and vitamins and adds to the nutritive value of forage and fodder crops. It also promotes nodulation in legumes, which enhances biological nitrogen fixation. Sulphur plays an important role both in vegetative growth and reproductive development of plants. Deficiency in vegetative growth stage causes reduction in biomass production and reproductive stage drastically reduces flowering, pod setting, seed number and weights resulting lower seed yields and quality.
