Willard Sterling Boyle and George Elood Smith have invented a digital image sensor - CCD or Charged Coupled Device - which today has become an electronic eye in almost all areas of photography.rnFor their important roles in shaping modern information technology, the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics have honoured the scientists, with one half of the prize to Charles Kuen Kao, and Willard Sterling Boyle and George Elwood Smith sharing the other half.rnAccording to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Kao is honoured for his "groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibres of optical communication." Boyle and Smith are honured "for the invention of an imaging semiconductor circuit -the CCD sensor".
