Fighting deck cargo fires on container ships is likely to be on the agenda at this month's IMO Maritime Safety Committee meeting, with the Germany delegation expected to present a paper on the subject.rnThe initiative is partly based on work carried out by classification society Germanischer Lloyd. A GL spokesman commented that the efficiency of container ships' fire-fighling equipment for tackling major fires on the weatherdeck, in particular in the upper tiers of containers, has become an important issue. "GL has conducted a thorough examination of the current safety standards on the basis of the existing rules in relation to the challenges of a major lire occurring on the weatherdeck," the spokesman said.
