The air bag (1) for a ship (2) reduces the risk of sinking and comprises elastic and fireproof or fire-resistant material. It can be filled with gas to reduce the specific weight of the ship to the point that the risk of sinking is considerably lessened. The air bag (1) is fixed to the outer hull of the ship (2) so that on all sides one or more air bags can be fixed to prevent the ship developing a list. The bag can comprise a continuous hose or be divided into an arbitrary number of chambers. The enclosed gas can be evacuated in a controlled manner, using a set of control valves.
