Canada initiative embraces e-navigation

Canada is moving ahead with e-navigation to provide ships accurate, up-to-date information on marine hazards, water levels, weather, and ocean conditions as part of a package of measures to boost marine safety. J F Belzile, director of marine operations for the Shipping Federation of Canada (SFC), which represents shipowners, is the co-chair of the government-industry e-navigation committee that is spearheading the plan. He told IHS Maritime that the system under development, which uses IMO guidance, "is a good fit for the industry's needs". The e-navigation initiative garnered public attention with the May announcement of tanker safety measures by Canadian transport minister Lisa Raitt. She affirmed that Canada will take a leadership role in implementing e-navigation in all domestic waters, including the Great Lakes.
