Reports of piracy attacks in Nigerian waters are exaggerated, according to the director general of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). The NIMASA director-general, Dakuku Peterside, has urged the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) to ensure fairness and balance in its reportage of piracy issues in Nigeria's territorial waters. Peterside expressed regret over what he said were exaggerated report on incidences of piracy in the country's waterways. His comments were made on 4 December in Lagos, when a delegation of the International Maritime Security Operations Team (IMSOT) from the UK visited NIMASA.
