Turning to automation

In September 2015, the Tennessee Department of Transportation's (TDOT) Fast Fix 8 in Nashville was nearing the end of a $62 million bridge renovation. With an ADT of 130,000, traffic was a primary concern to ensure minimal disruption. One of the immediate needs when ProTech Coatings of Salt Lake City, the Fast Fix 8 contractor, reached out to SprayWorks Equipment Group was placing a Versa-Flex BDM System (poly, shear) on four pairs of bridge surfaces that were previously deteriorating. The contractor was awarded with installing the Versa-Flex System, and when challenged with the conditions of the timeline, the contractor turned to automation. Deterioration was a huge safety issue, with chunks of the bridge deck falling on oncoming cars on multiple occasions. At the point SprayWorks was brought in on the Fast Fix 8 project by ProTech, one major challenge was dealing with a short timeline where contractors could only work on weekends.
