Linear viscoelastic (LVE) characterization of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) has traditionally been performed by conducting dynamic modulus or creep compliance tests. Results from each test can typically describe a different range of LVE response with some overlap. In the field of polymer viscoelasticity, LVE characterization of the material is most often performed by combining experimental dynamic and static tests to obtain a wider range of responses. This paper presents three different numerical approaches to determining LVE properties of HMA using a generalized Kelvin model (GKM) representation of the experimental creep compliance and dynamic modulus. The main advantages of combining the test results is that a wider range of material response can be modeled while a more representative characterization is obtained in the region where results from both tests overlap.
