MARKET SURVEY 2: MALT SCOTCH WHISKY

Sales of malt Scotch whisky reached a record 2.42 mn lpa, or 720,000 cases, in 1997. With market growth evident throughout most of the preceding ten years, interrupted temporarily only in the early 1990s, sales volume in 1997 was up 86 per cent on the level of 1986. The progress of malt whisky contrasts sharply with the fortunes of the very much Larger blended Scotch market, which suffered a 33 per cent decline over the Period 1986-1996. The malt share of aggregate Scotch volume has, as a result, Risen form 2.85 per cent to 7.33 per cent over that period.
