Global economic weakness, especially in Europe, has resulted in a less-than-stellar worldwide steel market. With shipments of new steel being flat or down slightly in 2013 for many countries, scrap demand has softened and prices have dipped to new lows for this decade4. May scrap prices for the U.S. were down $5-$15 per ton and the value of ferrous scrap fell again in June.
