Several categories of curbside paper rose in value in mid-summer, and the value of natural HDPE bales jumped by 22%. The following prices reflect values seen on the Secondary Materials Pricing Index on RecyclingMarkets.net in mid-August 2020. The national average price for corrugated containers (PS 11) was up marginally from July to August, moving from $55 per ton to $57 per ton. The OCC grade was trading for around $27 per ton one year ago and at a high of $180 in July 2017. OCC hit a recent high of $107 per ton in May, driven by supply and demand changes caused by COVID-19 shutdowns. Sorted residential papers (PS 56) were also up again, this time by 20%. In August, the grade was averaging nearly $33 per ton, compared with $27 per ton in July. It was at $104 in August 2017. Sorted office papers (PS 37), however, were down 26%, trading at $103 per ton in August, compared with a $139-per-ton national average in July. A year ago, the grade traded for $101 per ton.
