West Coast Railways' 37685 Loch Arkaig returned to traffic on November 29 on an ECS from Carnforth to Bristol with 37516 Loch Laidon but failed early on into its trip. The train was rescued by DRS's 57302 Chad Varah which hauled the train to Preston. Two Class 57s, 57313/315 ran light to Preston with 57315 returning the dead 37685 - which had been under repair at Carnforth for several months - back to its home base while 57313 and 37516 continued with the stock on its trip to Bristol for its booked steam charter the next day. 37516 was retained on the back of the 70013 Oliver Cromwell-hauled charter to Crewe on November 30 but piloted the steam loco back from Shrewsbury after an incident on the approach to the station.
