DURING 1972 a pair of 302hp 0-4-0DH Andrew Barclay locos, AB 578 and AB 579, were delivered to the Royal Ordnance Factory at Puriton, Somerset - a chemical and explosives factory that, as such, did not welcome many visits. Between 1971 and 1973 the M5 motorway was built and went over the line between the works and the BR exchange sidings. The branch had to be rebuilt on a new alignment over the motorway, with severe gradients on both sides of a new viaduct. More powerful locos were required, hence the purchase of the Andrew Barclay examples that were equipped for tandem working, although I'm unsure how much use was made of this capability.
