The rail mode aims to boost energy efficiency

The rail mode is one of the most energy-efficient and environmental-friendly transport modes. Nonetheless, it, like the others, has to become even more economical in consuming energy, in the interests of sustainable development. To promote efficiency, UIC hosted a meeting of more than one hundred specialists in Paris on 10 and 11 May 2000. UNIFE (Union of European Railway Industries) gave a number of papers. "We have, set ourselves the goal of reducing the costs of rail transport and consolidating its environmental lead over other transport modes", affirms Gunther Ellwanger, Director for Environment at UIC.
