The Georgian railway has played a special role in the social and economic development of Georgia for 130 years now. It is no exaggeration to say that the railway always has and will be a pillar of the national economy. The clearly defined remit of the railway is essential to the normal functioning and development of the country's economic sector. The Georgian railway is part of the transport artery running between the Black and Caspian Seas and is part of the Eurasian transport corridor. The railway is the shortest route between Europe and central Asia, and links the north and the south of the continent. The idea to build a transport line between the Black and Caspian Seas emerged in the 1860s. The objective was to connect Baku to Tiflis by rail and to create a transport route through to the ports of Batumi and Poti.
