With both Network Rail and South West Trains reporting good progress with their deep alliance, and growing enthusiasm for similar schemes, an issue yet to be addressed is retendering when the franchise ends. While separate legal and operational responsibilities remain in place, the NR/SWT alliances reports rapid integration of the management team.With five years of the SWT franchise still to run, the management structure of the vertically-reintegrated operation can only become even more homogenous. Equally, in entering the alliance, NR made it clear that the 'chemistry' of the parties involved was an important factor.
