'We as a company have huge responsibilities and face many challenges', said Network Rail Chief Executive Mark Carne on February 25, marking his first anniversary in post by giving the annual George Bradshaw Address to the Institution of Civil Engineers. In what former Transport Secretary Lord Adonis called an 'extraordinarily frank address', Carne focused on 'people and culture', emphasising that there was 'nothing more important to the future success of the railway'. Insisting that 'continuously improving performance is non-negotiable', he said he wanted to see NR getting 'better every day', calling for a 'culture shift' in safety and diversity.
