Electrification uncertainty shapes TPE fleet

A requirement of the ITT for the replacement TransPennine Express franchise is to operate at least 90% of the mileage in the December 2019 train plan using electric traction on 'a typical Wednesday in autumn'. This applies to routes which will be electrified under Network Rail's rolling programme, and DfT notes that it does not preclude the deployment of diesel-powered stock to provide additional capacity to meet peak demand.
