With only 10% of its current traffic of 27 million passenger-journeys a year generated by business travel, TransPennine Express is targeting this market as it prepares to increase capacity through the introduction of three new train fleets. The first to be delivered will be the 23 m long Mk Va coaches now being manufactured in Spain by CAF, which will be formed into 13 rakes of five vehicles. The permanently-coupled sets incorporating a driving trailer will be powered by Class 68 locomotives leased from DRS, which is to make available a dedicated pool of 14 modified to haul the CAF cars, plus a further two to provide cover.
