Recent analytical techniques used for monitoring air pollution by harmful substances were described. The substances covered were 11 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and two metallic elements (Ni, As), which were selected as pollutants requiring urgent control in Japan. The analytical techniques used were mainly the canister method for sampling, the GC/MS method for VOCs analysis and the ICP method for elemental analysis. Satisfactory analytical capabilities at Kobe Steel Group were also mentioned.
