Crop Losses from Air Pollutants: A GIS Regional Analysis and Statewide CropLosses from Air Pollutants

The objective of this project was to develop statewide crop-by-county estimatedfor ozone-caused yield losses in 1991 and 1992, and to expand the methodological basis of the California Air Resources Board's Crop Loss Assessment Program by using GIS techniques to disaggregate the data used to estimate yield losses in California. Ozone concentrates on a monthly basis were interpolated within state air basins using data from the California Air Resources Board, and imposing a 2,000 foot altitudinal barrier to air pollution transport. Monthly average 7-hr, 12-hr and SUM06 values were calculated. Potential yield losses were estimated using yield response functions published in the open literature, and delimited by the location and extend of irrigated farmlands within a given agricultural production area.
