With air combat machines in short supply, the Austro-Hungarian Army Air Service called on Ernst Heinkel to fill the gap until Albatros fighters could be acquired from Germany. The H-B D.1 was the resu ugly even by the standards of the time, it was nevertheless strong and practical, which is not quite the same as successful! It was a machine for 'A level' pilots because it needed to be handled with care; it could bite! Numerous photos of crashed Star strutters bear witness to what could happen to the unwary, from spinning in, to the gentler but still embarrassing nose-overs on landing.
