Craftlab Hansa-Brandenburg airborne

Ernst Pieech's reproduction Hansa-Brandenburg C.I two-seat World War One reconnaissance aircraft made its first flight at Wiener Neustadt airfield near Vienna on 4 October, three years after an agreement was made with Koloman Mayrhofer to build the aeroplane at his Craftlab workshop. Test pilot Saso Knez made two further flights, the aeroplane performing flawlessly, but by mid-October only one hour had been flown due to un-co-operative weather. The aircraft was produced using a set of original drawings, and the construction is totally authentic. An original, 225hp Austro-Daimler engine built in June 1918 powers the machine. Koloman says: "The engine took 1,200 hours to rebuild, and now runs perfectly. There are only seven examples of this engine known to exist worldwide. I have spent 30 years researching, and have not been able to find another one.
