Independent educational charity The Smallpeice Trust has launched its new 2009 course timetable and is now seeking students to sample its 'taster' engineering courses. Each four-day residential course is designed to attract and encourage students who have an interest or natural flair in science, maths, design or technology to consider a career in engineering. Among the wide range of courses on offer are two on mining and minerals, both sponsored by Anglo American and Rio Tinto, which will give 15-to-17-year-old students the opportunity to discover how mining and quarrying underpins much of modern life, and how technology is used to limit the impact of these activities on the environment. The first mining and minerals course will take place at the University of Exeter from 20-23 July 2009 and will include a day at the underground facilities at Camborne School of Mines and also visits to a local quarry and the Eden Project's new educational centre.
