Cairns Regional Council is the first council in Australia to use an innovative technology known as Geo-Synthetically Confined Soil (GCS). This technology was used in an embankment stabilisation project at Yarrabah Road in Far North Queensland. GCS is a compacted earth retaining system where soil is reinforced by layers of geo-synthetic material and secured to the existing road formation by soil nails. Extensive geo-technical investigations were carried out and numerous designs were considered during the 12 month planning phase. The project was completed within four weeks. An unstable cut batter alongside Yarrabah Road posed a safety hazard due to an ongoing risk of falling rocks. Council was engaged by DTMR to construct additional road width and install a rock fall arrest system.
