Tom Peck's feature on fairness and Daisy McAndrew's interview with Trades Union Congress general secretary Brendan Barber (September/October issue) both raise important issues. Yet neither journalist mentions the work of Elliott Jaques and the Glacier Project - which may be history but should not be forgotten. Those working in an industrial hierarchy were found to have a very strong sense of what was a proper reward for their contribution. Jaques called it felt-fair pay and was able to use it as a tool in organisation analysis.
