Collaboration works

During the throes of the general election campaign, for many it will seem like politics has just become a shouting match, in which no one is listening. The political parties are all too often focused on constantly attacking one another, and working together is considered a weakness. Yet one of CMI's key management mega-trends has been the benefits of collaboration, as opposed to competition. And arguably, during the period of post-war consensus politics, we saw significant benefits of collaboration built on a common purpose. There were shared goals in terms of rebuilding the economy, social welfare and the avoidance of international conflict. Interestingly, for some, this period has been talked about as the "end of ideology" and "the rise of managerialism"; the concept that the majority share a view about what society should look like, and politics is about proving one's competence in reaching that same goal.
