Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes encode numerous proteins that contribute to healthy immune function. Though HLA polymorphisms have been linked to autoimmune and infectious diseases, efforts to characterize these highly related genes and their many alleles using standard sequencing technologies have proven expensive and technically challenging.
