Suppression of Electrical Interference to High-Frequency Apparatus in Naval Vessels

The paper is a review of the special problem of the suppression of interference from electrical equipment in naval craft. The paper deals for the most part with only the smaller vessels, e.g. coastal and landing craft, since the problem is very much reduced in steel-decked ships for obvious reasons. The relative importance of the alternative methods of eliminating interference, namely screening and suppression at source, are discussed, and it is concluded that suppression at source is the more certain and durable. Details are given of the design and performance of the suppression equipment in use at the end of the war. The development of suitable components to withstand the rigours of naval service is also described, with particular reference to capacitors. The trends towards the use of the bushing capacitor and the iron-dust toroid are indicated, together with illustrations from German war-time practice. There are brief references to interference measurement and to the instruments employed.
