Before you even opened a cam catalog, you probably made a decision as to whether your new cam will be a flat or roller design. The same goes for deciding on a solid or hydraulic. Making this choice is usually based on cost and whether or not you want the valvetrain to run quietly with minimum maintenance. You may have also based that choice on the valvetrain's absolute power potential, regardless of noise or service intervals. At least up to a few years ago the dividing lines were relatively clear. If you were looking for a quiet, low-maintenance valve-train, the near-automatic choice was hydraulic. If the budget stretched to it and power was a prime consideration, then a roller-tappet design was usually preferred over a flat-tappet.
