Crude oil is one of the threatening environmental pollutants which cause numerous adverse effects on the environment. So the attention is focused on ecofriendly biodegradation of crude oil using microbes. Marine actinomycetes were isolated from Tiruchendur coastal area and identified as Streptomyces indiaensis ACT 7 and Streptomyces hygroscopicus ACT 14. They were used for the efficient degradation of waste crude oil as single sp and mixed consortium. The crude oil was degraded by extremophilic marine Streptomyces spp. with extreme pH (8, 9 and 10) and temperatures (40°C, 45°C and 50°C) for 28 days. The increased pH and temperature showed the highest degradation rate of crude oil waste. Among single sp. S. hygroscopicus ACT 14 exhibited maximum degradation rate of crude oil comparing to S. indiaensis ACT 7. The mixed consortium showed maximum degradation rate of 96.0 per cent at pH 10.0 and 50°C on 28lh day than single sp. and control.
