FirstEnergy mulls converting 1,710-MW plant

FirstEnergy is conducting a long-term study to determine if it would be economical to bring its 1,710-MW Hatfield's Ferry coal-fired plant back online, possibly with the capability of burning natural gas. The company deactivated the western Pennsylvania plant in October 2013 but a year later proposed to PJM Interconnection that it could reactivate the plant in 2019, Ray Dotter, a PJM spokesman, said Wednesday in an interview. PJM studied the request and the company's right to interconnect the plant through 2019 was approved.
