WANO expanding early involvement in new plant construction, says CEO

The World Association of Nuclear Operators is seeking to expand its program of inspections of new nuclear power plants in the early stages of construction, the organization’s CEO said in an interview October 5. WANO’s New Unit Assistance, or NUA, program has been in operation for about two years, Peter Prozesky said. He noted that one of the main goals of this program is to ensure that an “operating organization” for a new nuclear plant is in place well before fuel is first loaded into the plant. WANO defines an operating organization as the basic corporate and operational infrastructure to run a nuclear plant. WANO contributes to the development of such organizations in a variety of ways, including site visits, training and information provision, the WANO CEO said.
