European nuclear safety regulators seek shake up of topical peer reviews

European nuclear safety regulators are seeking to revamp their main tool for promoting safety improvements — periodic detailed and lengthy topical peer reviews — with greater public and stakeholder involvement being suggested and more generous timelines offered after criticism of both the organization and outcomes of the first review focused on managing aging of nuclear reactors. The changes were announced during the first online stakeholder conference organized by the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group, or Ensreg, on June 22 focused on preparations for a second peer review procedure focused on fire safety at nuclear facilities. The fire review, concentrated on prevention, detection, and mitigation, will cover operating nuclear plants, research facilities, fuel enrichment plants, decommissioned plants and fuel storage facilities linked with nuclear plants.
