Detroit Edison to file NRC application on September 18 for new nuclear plant

In a month, Detroit Edison is poised to take the first tentative step down a long regulatory road that could culminate in a new nuclear power plant in a decade or so. The DTE Energy subsidiary has been talking publicly about the possibility of building another nuclear plant for months (EUW, 28 April, 19), saying new baseload generation is needed to serve Detroit Ed's 2.2 million customers in southwestern Michigan. Detroit Ed is the largest electric utility in Michigan. If built, the plant would be near the site of Detroit Ed's existing 1,100-MW Fermi 2 nuclear plant on the shores of Lake Erie near Monroe. The new facility most likely would cost in excess of $3 billion and be in the range of 1,500 MW.
