The US could learn a thing or two from China about design-ning, installing and operating transmission lines of 800 kV and nhigher, but this country is significantly ahead of the Asian nnation when it comes to switching to a smart grid and inte-ngrating energy efficiency measures into power markets, Federal nEnergy Regulatory Commission Chairman Jon Wellinghoff said nlast week.nAs for building major power lines, China is “doing substan-ntial work on lowering their line losses through higher voltages,” nWellinghoff said in a June 2 interview after a trip to China in nlate May. “I think that’s something we could collaborate on in nthe future.” nAmong other things, US grid operators, project developers nand state and federal regulators could benefit from learning the ntechnologies behind building, operating and integrating high-nvoltage direct current lines of 800 kV and 1,000 kV into existing nsystems, Wellinghoff said. “We have no lines at that level in noperation.”
