This paper basically discusses how to calculate the timing sequence of a capacitor-based railgun with a given muzzle velocity. First, based on the magnitude of rail current, the ideal timing sequence of a given rail current magnitude is defined. Second, the relationship between the muzzle velocity and the magnitude of the flat-topped rail current is analyzed. Through theoretical analyses, a nonweighted iteration method is directly developed by approximating the ideal timing sequence. Further, by improving the iteration process of the nonweighted iteration method, a variable-weighted iteration method is introduced. Simulations and experiments show that the variable-weighted iteration method is suitable for solving such problems.
